Navigating food and nutrition labels can be daunting – so many ingredients and so many ways to spin them. Consumers are demanding more and more natural products. Unfortunately, the term natural on a label can be very misleading. Natural flavorings (like natural) can be just as misleading. It is the 4th most common ingredient listed on labels, but what is it?
According to the FDA definition it is a flavor derived from any animal or plant BUT NOT necessarily the one it’s supposed to taste like. For example, parts of vanilla flavoring sometimes come from a chemical obtained from corn or rice. Natural Flavorings are often altered later with synthetic compounds as well.
Real Flavoring is not an official category yet. Some health foodies would like to change that. Currently, these are ingredients that come from the products they say they do. Example: if something says it’s lemon flavored, it’s made from lemons. Watch for the word real and do not trust the word “natural” on labels.
